Some terms used in this archive come from within the communities where these practices are found. Others are used for clarity in writing and documentation.
“Serpent handling” refers to worship practices involving the handling of snakes in certain Pentecostal congregations. “Signs following” is a phrase used within some of these communities to describe practices associated with faith and worship. These terms may carry different meanings depending on context and speaker.
When possible, language here follows the terms used by participants themselves. In other cases, descriptive language is used to help situate materials for readers who may not be familiar with the practice.
Meanings are not fixed across all settings, and terms may be used differently from church to church or person to person.
